title: Throttle tube mod for Triumph Daytona
date: 2025-08-28
tags: triumph, daytona, motorbike, 3d print
category: hardware
summary: Add aftermarket grips with a redesigned throttle tube.
Status: Draft
---
I own a Triumph Daytona and I'm pretty happy with it. Only problem is that Triumph had the terrible idea to vulcanize
the outer rubber grip onto the trottle tube. Making it impossible to fit after market grips on the throttle. You can see
what I mean on the pictures. This basically forces you to always buy the original grips. They are not terrible but there
are curtainly better ones out there.

So my solution was simple. I designed a new throttle tube that would fit the electronic throttle but have a standard
outer diameter, so you can fit normal aftermarket grips on top. This is how it works on most other motorbikes. I did
that in FreeCAD which has become my goto parametric CAD software nowadays. It's really nice to use since the 1.0
release. You can find the CAD files in my [printables][printables] post.
Most things were easy to measure with some calipers. I used a geometry triangle to figure out the angles. Turns out the
details are not super important. As long as the top fits into the throttle and turns it properly, you're fine. The
first test print looked like this:
![test print in yellow PLA in low quality](images/throttle_tube_mod_02.jpg)
![drawn angles of the top end with the yellow test print next to it](images/throttle_tube_mod_03.jpg)
Everything fits nicely and the throttle works as expected. Only problem is that this tube will likely break when I
squeeze the throttle too much. Even worse, it will break around the layer lines which will make it impossible to still
use the throttle properly.

I didn't find a way to circumvent this problem. I could've printed it with lots of supports in a different angle but
then it would be brittle in a different direction. I could print it with an SLA printer but they also have layer
adhesion problems under strong forces. So I decided to try out the MJF tech from [JLC3D][jlc3d] (not sponsored). It's a
proprietary method from HP that is pretty much the same as SLS. So a fine nylon powder will be glued together with a
fusing agent and hardened under high temperature with infrared light. This should be plenty strong to hold my grip. Even
my FDM prints in PA612-CF are super strong but PA6 absorbs a lot of moisture and the carbon fiber is super rough and
make it hard to glide the grip onto the tube.
So here is a picture of the tube from JLC3D:

It fit perfectly on the handle and my new grips hold onto it perfectly. Feel free to print your own or remix my model.
But don't blame me if it brakes. I take no responsibility if you decide you do that.
